The 2019 Season has Begun!

What a truly wonderful week it has been in Cannon Beach! We began the week with snow on the BEACH!!! On top of Haystack Rock! The snow only lasted a few hours but it made the beach more magical than normal, which I did not think was even possible. I hope everyone got to go out and enjoy it. 






As the week continued on, our wonderful staff environmental educators went through a training in order to prepare for a seasonal full of educating you on the beach. We all spent countless hours getting all of the equipment ready to go to the beach.

And FINALLY...the first official beach shift of the season took place yesterday morning. It was a successful, fun, cold, and rewarding morning at the Rock. We talked to wonderful visitors that were full of questions and enthusiasm (two of our favorite things)!






Now, if the seabirds would return from sea for nesting season at the Rock everything would be complete! But until then, there is tons of tide pools waiting to be explored! \

Nudibranchs in the Tidepools

Nudibranchs, also referred to as sea slugs, can frequently be spotted in the tidepools at Haystack Rock. There are many species of nudibranch, most having outstanding markings and colors. The nudibranch feed on bryozoans, hydroids and sponges and it's color can be changed by the food it eats.   The nudibranch has a pair of sensory projections on their head, called rhinophores, which allow them to smell and taste. Virtually all nudibranchs have some form of eyes but they are not well developed and in most cases are little more than a pigment spot in the head near the rhinophores.  The nudibranch breathes through gill projections which extract oxygen from the seawater. The Pacific Northwest has more than 200 species of nudibranchs. The Opalescent Nudibranch ( Hermissenda crassicornis ) could be called 'showy'. Spring, Sprang!

Spring has sprung at Haystack Rock and with it volunteer and staff Environmental Interpreters are finding loads of eggs and tiny juvenile recruits of different types. There have also been very interesting sightings of more precarious types that come with warmer weather; read our HRAP "nature notes" to learn more.... Tidepool Sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus , eggs  Bright yellow Tidepool Sculpin, Oligocottus maculosus , eggs can be found among the barnacles and mussels, often above the tide pools during low tide. Sculpin can vary in color from red-brown to green  and can grow up to 9cm long. Acorn Barnacle, Balanus glandula , recruits  Tiny, juvenile Acorn Barnacle recruits dot the intertidal like adorable polka dots. These animals have small, white volcano-like shells and are very common in the tide pools at Haystack Rock and elsewhere along the Oregon coast.
